The mental health of children and youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina is an increasingly crucial topic, especially following the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to recent research, almost a third of young people in Eastern Europe face issues such as anxiety and depression. These challenges are further compounded by stigma, a lack of information, and limited access to professional services. In light of these challenges, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new project, “Mind Matters: Strengthening Adolescent Health and Resilience – Mental Health Awareness in Una-Sana Canton Schools,” which aims to bolster the mental health and resilience of young people in the Una-Sana Canton.
What is the Goal of the Project?
The “Mind Matters” project seeks to reduce stigma, increase awareness of mental health, and encourage young people to seek help when they need it. Through education, support, and campaigns, we want to create a safer environment in schools and communities where conversations about mental health are accepted and encouraged.
Key Project Activities
The “Mind Matters” project includes the following activities:
-
Training for school staff – Selected pedagogues and psychologists from 60 primary and secondary schools will undergo training on recognizing symptoms of mental health difficulties and providing basic support.
-
Workshops for students, parents, and teachers – Interactive activities will help all involved better understand emotional resilience, stress regulation, and techniques for coping with challenges.
-
Awareness campaigns – Through social media and joint school activities, we will spread the message about the importance of mental health, with a special focus on reducing stigma.
-
Monitoring and evaluation – We will track the program’s impact through surveys and evaluations to ensure that the planned results are achieved.
Who are the Project Beneficiaries?
Directly involved project beneficiaries:
-
1,800 students
-
600 teachers
-
600 parents in the Una-Sana Canton.
Innovative Approach
A distinctive feature of this project is the introduction of Youth Mental Health Ambassadors – students who will be educated to spread awareness among their peers. Also, through practical manuals for teachers, we will integrate mental health into daily school practice.
Partner Support
The “Mind Matters” project is implemented by the Humanitarian Organization Genesis Project in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of the Una-Sana Canton, Crossing Borders, and UNICEF Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is co-financed by the European Union. Additional support is provided by the Pedagogical Institute of the Una-Sana Canton, the Cantonal Hospital in Bihać, and the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Banja Luka.
Life is a Direction, not a Destination
We invite all parents, students, and teachers to get involved in the project activities and collectively contribute to creating communities that nurture mental health and support.
The “Mind Matters” project is our response to the growing need for mental health support for children and youth. With collective effort, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to feel safe, strong, and supported.
