DONOR: UNICEF Bosnia and Herzegovina
DURATION: March 2010 – January 2011
LOCATION: The project was implemented in 20 selected primary schools which are located in the following communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Banja Luka, East Sarajevo, Modrica, Doboj, Derventa, Sarajevo, Zenica, Kljuc, Doboj-South and Bosanski Petrovac.
OVERALL GOAL: The general objective of the project was to create an environment in the targeted primary schools that will provide the response of the entire school to peer violence and allow the children, teachers and parents to develop and support actions aimed against peer violence.
Project ,,Safer Environment for Children’’ was designed to contribute to the protection and well-being of children at two levels:
• At community level, by addressing the risks posed to child safety and the existing causes of child injuries;
• At school level, the focus is on prevention of the risks of violent behaviour of school children through promotion of non-violent and peaceful environments in schools.
The project goal was to provide school teachers, parents and children with appropriate tools, knowledge and skills in order to actively participate in the establishment of effective responses to the risks posed by child injuries and violence amongst children.
The project aim was to improve child safety in the targeted communities through capacity building and developing models for promotion of youth participation in addressing the safety problems, with the primary focus on prevention of risks posed by small arms, violence and main child injuries.
The project goal was also to target different groups of beneficiaries: children, teachers, parents, local community representatives and enable them to initiate, develop and support the school and community based responses to violence and risks posed to child safety.
The project was consisted of three main components and related activities:
1. Safer community planning
2. Violence prevention programs in primary schools
3. Follow-up activities in the 10 Safer Community Planning project locations (implemented in 2009 as part of the larger SPIS project)
Project was implemented in full accordance with the project plan and all planned project outcomes have been successfully reached.
