Principals and deputy principals of primary schools from the Hercegbosna County had the opportunity last week to get acquainted with the Program of Secondary Prevention focused on the identification and protection of children from risk factors in primary schools, which is implemented in the County by the humanitarian organization “Genesis Project” from Banja Luke, as a technical partner of UNICEF Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The workshop for principals is a very important activity within this Program, said the executive director of the “Genesis Project” Dijana Pejić, given that principals and their deputies should support the professional service of the school, a pedagogue, a psychologist, and every teacher in their school to be empowered through education, which this organization will offer through the Program.

“School staff and professional service will not do any additional work, but the one they did before, but in a better and systematically resolved way,” said Pejić.

During the half-day workshop, an expert lecture on the importance of the “Secondary Prevention Program focused on the identification and protection of children from risk factors in primary schools”, which has already been successfully implemented in Sarajevo and Tuzla Canton, and the entire Republic of Srpska, was held by prof. dr. Elvedin Muratbegović and Doctor of Psychological Sciences from the Faculty of Philosophy in Banja Luka, Ivana Zečević.

Secondary prevention aims to prevent unacceptable forms of behavior as early as possible and to provide support and care to the child, at a certain risk, stated prof. Zecevic.

“If it is noticed that a certain behavior of a child is manifested continuously for a period of time, then that behavior is noted down and monitored. Only when it is noticed that the child has a set of some unusual behavior patterns, then one thinks about how to approach the child, how to make an individual plan of work with children in order to prevent some later inappropriate behavior, “ said Professor Zečević.

Prof. dr. Muratbegović introduced all present principals and deputy principals with the implementation of the Program of Secondary Prevention in all primary schools in the Sarajevo Canton, and with the challenges and lessons learned during the past few years of the program implementation.

The workshop held in Tomislavgrad was attended by 16 principals and deputy principals from 8, out of a total of 9 primary schools included in this Program.

Based on this response, as well as observations and comments made by school representatives during the workshop, it can be said that quality implementation Program of Secondary Prevention focused on the identification and protection of children from risk factors in primary schools in the Hercegbosna County is not in question.

As we found out, the problems were registered in most schools, various forms of unacceptable behavior were noticed in some students, however, due to the lack of an elaborate and comprehensive program and referral mechanism, there was no reaction in the best way.

This program, as they pointed out, will certainly influence the prevention of unacceptable forms of behavior, but also enable the empowerment of teachers and the professional service of the school.

The implementation of the Program of Secondary Prevention focused on the identification and protection of children from risk factors in primary schools in Hercegbosna County was welcomed by representatives of the County Ministry of Science, Education, Culture and Sports, social work centers Livno and Tomislavgrad, and representatives of the Livno Mental Health Center and social work from Tomislavgrad and Livno, who took an active part in the workshop in Tomislavgrad.

The program of secondary prevention, in the schools of Hercegbosna County, is implemented by the humanitarian organization “Genesis Project”, as a technical partner of UNICEF Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the project is implemented under the auspices of the Swedish government.
